Harold Lloyd - Girl Shy, Part One
November 9, 2008, admin
I’m hoping to put links up to the whole film.
Harold Lloyd is, for reasons that completely escape me, less well remembered than some of his contemporaries (e/g/ Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton). His comic timing and athleticism were astounding.
Girl Shy (1924) is not one of Lloyd’s funniest, partly because it was written as a character-based comedy, instead of a gag-based one. It was the first film he made after breaking from Hal Roach. However, I still find it fascinating as a document of American life over 80 years ago.
Part One just sets the scene. Interesting how ideas of female pulchitrude have changed as presumably the girls that visit Harold are great beauties of their day.
Today, Harold Lloyd is - quite unjustifiably - an almost forgotten comic genius. Fortunately, there are now some fantastic collections on DVD. Watch Harold’s best films as they should be seen! Just follow the links below to find these at the cheapest prices available - they make ideal birthday or Christmas presents.
